Amateur vs. Commercial Radio Capabilities

Can I use a commercial radio for amateur (Ham) use?

Yes. Licensed amateur operators can legally transmit on ham bands using a Part 90 commercial radio under FCC Part 97 rules. However, AnyTone and Maverick radios are configured at purchase into two distinct operational versions to comply with FCC regulations:

  • If you select the Commercial version, the radio is locked into Part 90 commercial compliance. Front-panel keypad entry and VFO frequency mode are disabled (requiring CPS programming software), and transmission bandwidth is capped at 12.5 kHz narrowband.
  •  If you select the Amateur version, the radio comes configured with direct VFO keypad entry, supports creating and editing memory channels directly from the keypad, and enables 25 kHz wideband transmission strictly for amateur bands. 
  • Transmitting on commercial frequencies requires both a valid FCC Part 90 business license and operating a radio configured in the compliant Commercial version.

Can I use an amateur radio for commercial use?

No. FCC regulations mandate that any radio transmitting on commercial frequencies must hold dedicated Part 90 Equipment Authorization (47 CFR § 90.203). When configured as the Amateur version, the radio is legally restricted to transmitting strictly within amateur radio bands, even if the user holds a business license. Organizations requiring transmission on commercial frequencies must select the Commercial version at checkout.

Can I use a commercial radio for GMRS, FRS, or MURS?

Not for transmitting. Personal radio services (GMRS, FRS, and MURS) are governed by FCC Part 95, which requires dedicated transmitter certification. Commercial and Amateur radio configurations both lack Part 95 equipment authorization, making transmission on these channels unlawful.

However, FCC rules do not restrict receiving or monitoring these frequencies. Every AnyTone model we carry and the Maverick can be programmed for receive-only monitoring of GMRS, FRS, and MURS channels regardless of which version you select.

What is required to program these radios?

Every AnyTone and Maverick radio includes a USB programming cable in the box. The programming software (CPS) is available as a free download on the product support page for your radio model.

What if I accidentally select the wrong version at checkout?

Because radios are individually configured prior to shipment to ensure FCC compliance, operational modes cannot be toggled by the end-user through standard radio menus.

  • Before Shipment: If you notice an error on your order confirmation, contact our customer support team immediately so we can update your order to the correct version before it leaves our warehouse.
  • After Delivery: If you receive your radio and realize you ordered the incorrect version, please reach out to customer support for next steps.
